Bird safety & hygiene
There is nothing better than the joy of watching birds feed in your garden. Providing food and drink is a great way to lend them a helping hand, but it’s also crucial you keep their feeding area clean to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Regularly cleaning bird feeders and bird baths is vitally important to ensure birds stay healthy. We recommend you clean bird feeders and baths at least once a week. The water in bird baths should be changed daily.
Our feeders have been designed to be as easy to clean as possible. To clean your feederor bath use a non-toxic disinfectant such as Ark-Klens or a mild (5%) bleach solution and cleaning tool to remove old food and waste. If disinfectant is unavailable, use warm, soapy water. We recommend fully dismantling feeders to clean them. Use a cleaning brush to clean hanging/window feeders. Rinse all the parts after cleaning and ensure they are completely dry before reassembling. Always clean feeders outside while wearing waterproof gloves and make sure you wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
Due to evidence that some birds, such as finches, can be more exposed to disease when fed on flat surfaces, we have suspended all our bird tables and related products, Table mix and Table mix extra, window feeders and feeder guardians with trays, from sale. For further information, visit our bird tables page.
