Suet fat balls FAQs
What birds eat fat balls?
Fat balls, also known as suet balls, are popular with a wide variety of garden birds, both large and small. Blackbirds, tits, Dunnocks, Wrens, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Robins, Starlings and House Sparrows are just some of the species that enjoy eating fat balls.
What are fat balls made of?
Fat balls are made from suet, which is a high-fat, nutrient-rich food that is usually made from a mix of animal fat, blended with seeds, peanuts and insects, although specific ingredients can vary. Our Super suet fat balls are made from a mix of wheat flour, fats and oils, along with mixed seeds and ground peanuts. They are available in Original or with added sunflower hearts or mealworms.
Where do I put out fat balls for birds?
Fat balls can be placed directly on the ground, ideal for ground-feeding birds like Robins and Blackbirds, or in a suet feeder. Our suet feeders are made from tough, stainless steel and are available in a range of different types to fit in different amounts of suet balls, logs or cakes.
When should I put out fat balls for birds?
Birds can enjoy suet fat balls all year round, however this food is particularly beneficial for birds during the colder months, when natural sources of food can be scarce, as well as breeding season. Please note that in very hot weather suet may soften or melt, so it’s best to place it in shaded areas during this time.
How long do fat balls last?
The length of time suet lasts in a feeder depends on a variety of factors, from the popularity of the feeder to the current weather conditions. If you’re unsure on how much to put out, start with a small amount of food to begin with, then once you have frequent visitors you can increase this, aiming for the food to be eaten within a week. Feeders should be cleaned weekly to protect your garden birds from infectious diseases.
Are fat balls good for birds?
Fat balls are an excellent energy-rich treat for birds. Their high fat content means they offer birds valuable energy, which is particularly needed during cold weather and breeding seasons. Unlike a lot of suet on the market, RSPB Super suet doesn’t contain any cheap fillers like chalk (calcium carbonate), which has no nutritional value.
